Council Races Deadline to Secure Quad Park Funding

SUNSHINE Coast council has less than one month to sort out the remaining Quad Park grandstand financing or the whole project could collapse.

A council meeting was told yesterday that all aspects of the $15 million funding had to be in place for the federal government - which has committed $5 million - to sign off on by July 30, or it would pull out.

The council has also committed $5 million, but the state government has been equivocal about a similar amount it originally considered.

Councillors have now decided to ask for expressions of interest from companies in the marketplace to build the grandstand, which mayor Bob Abbot said may be cheaper now because of lower prices for steel and other materials, and bring the project in below the $15 million, should the state government not deliver part or all of its commitment.

"We are under pressure from the state government to show we are doing something," council finance director Greg Laverty said yesterday. …
