Green Jacket Bid Fits Just Fine for Full Entry

THE impact made by the return of the Green Jacket tournaments means there is likely to be a full entry of 70 golfers for the Camerons Scratch Open at Ponteland on Sunday.

Club secretary Chris Espiner said yesterday: "We have been a bit more proactive ourselves this season in creating more awareness about our tournament and that has helped.

"But the fact it counts towards the North East amateur rankings has made a huge difference and there is now no doubt whatsoever 36-hole scratch opens are back on the map to stay in the region. We ended up with 33 playing last year, and although we shall still take entries as late as Friday, we have 56 already this time.

"Many of these category one players usually leave it very late to enter, so we know we shall be full. It is great news."

The Green Jacket tournaments are back after a 10-year gap and this is the fourth of 10 ZFL Golf Order of Merit tournaments this season. Prudhoe's Danny Shevill has opted to play at Ponteland rather than defend the club championship the same day, having already qualified for The Journal Champion of Champions as the Northumberland junior matchplay champion. …
