NEWCASTLE Hospitals is already a national leader in emergency services, providing comprehensive urgent healthcare for victims of trauma and burn injuries.

The highly-skilled staff who run the service see over 120,000 people every year, providing immediate assessment and treatment for adults and children with anything from minor accidental injuries to life-threatening conditions.

But major changes are just around the corner. The current A& E department at the Newcastle General Hospital will move across the city in summer 2010, when Newcastle's brandnew Emergency Department opens its doors at the RVI.

Designed to become one of the first nationally-designated "Level One" Trauma Centres in Britain, the New Victoria Wing has been meticulously planned to ensure that every trauma victim has immediate access to specialist surgical, medical, neurological and intensive care experts, helping to maximise their chances of survival.

Bas Sen, head of the Emergency Department said: "The strength of our new Emergency Department lies in the design of the Trauma Block, which has all aspects of urgent care at its very heart. Critical care, operating theatres and advanced imaging services are clustered around the Emergency Department, which will also act as a 24-hour reception centre for stroke patients, giving direct access to stroke care.

"Newcastle's emergency staff are committed to providing the highest quality clinical care and it is our aim to gradually increase the number of consultant staff to operate a 24/7 on-site consultantled service. Putting all these fantastic facilities together with our first-rate staff means that Newcastle's Emergency Department will undoubtedly be one of the largest and most advanced of its kind, not only in the UK, but in Europe."

The trauma centre will be staffed 24 hours a day by on-site leading surgeons and physicians.
