There's nothing like the jolting force of a four-letter word to raise your eyebrows and leave you gasping.

And when it comes to powerful four-letter words, one that's always guaranteed to achieve the impossible and stop me mid sentence is -'Sale'.

The promise of a decent 50 per cent off sale never fails to get my blood tingling, my credit card and palms sweating in anticipation and my shopping endorphins doing back flips.

Recently I left my comfort zone, otherwise known as the golden triangle of retail - Park Beach Plaza, Coffs City Centre and the Promenade/Jetty and took a drive to Toormie on the strength of a sale advert I'd spotted for a shop at Centro Toormina.

My kids, smelling the chance of mama having a big spend up and hoping for a few treats at the shops, volunteered to sit in the back of the car and tease each other all the way down Hogbin Drive.

Even my normally shopaphobic hubby got in on the act and said he wouldn't mind a change of scenery and volunteered his services as a chauffeur.

A change of scenery? Shopping, as well as driving with both kids inside the vehicle? Yeah right.

He was fooling no-one.

His sudden enthusiasm for joining the spending safari had more to do with not tackling the 12ft high anthills in our front garden and avoiding cleaning out the garage, which were the alternate activities I'd scheduled for his afternoon.

Off familiar home turf and feeling like the visiting team, we did three laps of the Centro car park before hubby and I agreed on a suitable spot.

Once inside the shopping centre, all was going well for the first couple of minutes; my family were walking in a straight line right behind me.

The drilling I had given them earlier on the importance of staying together had worked.

It's not that I'm so bothered about losing one of them; I just don't like to waste precious shopping time trawling shopping centres for casualties. …
