Life's Still a Beach for Wilson and His Fan Club

SOME 1,700 people - a capacity audience - imbibed on the happy drug that is Brian Wilson in Hall One.

The fan club was out in force and one lucky member, one Sue Levine, got treated to a special round of Happy Birthday, Beach Boys style, before the gig got under way.

Actually, it took a little time for this to happen. The drum kit was there, the guitar stands, the keyboards and a few furtive roadies - but of the band itself, not a glimpse.

"He'll not turn up," a man near me muttered darkly.

But then there he was, walking towards the stool to which he would remain rooted.

"Well, thank you for coming," he said.

"We're not The Beatles, we're not The Rolling Stones, we're not even The Beach Boys. We are just us and you are you and we're going to have some fun."

The former top Beach Boy has had his tough times. People before the gig had warned that he is not what he was. Well, who is? Others, who saw him at Newcastle City Hall five years ago, said he was brilliant. …
