Horror Run on the Highway Continues

A HORROR run on our highways continued yesterday, with two men hospitalised after their four-wheel drive and camper crashed off the road and into a tree near Benaraby.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 6.30am with the trapped men not pulled from the wrecked vehicle until 7.30am.

The driver, a man in his 50s, was believed to be intoxicated although police must wait for blood results to confirm whether he was over the legal limit.

Calliope Sergeant Mick Despot said the man's behaviour, if confirmed, was appalling.

"You would think grown men would know better than to drink and drive, especially towing a trailer," he told The Observer yesterday.

The men had left the road on the Bruce Highyway north of Benaraby, crashing through scrub before hitting a tree, he said. The four-wheel drive and camper trailer came to a rest 100m from the highway, requiring a major effort from emergency services to stretcher the injured men to ambulance. …
