DRIVERS are facing weeks of roadworks misery as well as the threat of speed cameras as one of the region's busiest roads undergoes essential maintenance.

The southbound carriageway of the A1 between the Angel of the North and Team Valley will be closed for repairs and cameras put in place on a contraflow on the northbound carriageway.

The 40mph traffic restrictions are being put in place so work can be carried out on the Allerdene Bridge which crosses the East Coast Mainline rail track.

As well as the southbound carriage closure, three slip roads will also be closed by the maintenance work, which starts on July 25 and is due to continue for 10 weeks.

Jeremy Forsberg, spokesman for the Northumbria Safer Roads Initiative, said: "The cameras are being installed to protect motorists and their vehicles. There are temporary barriers and lots of other road fur-nitursuch as signs and the speed restrictions will allow drivers more time to react to the road conditions. …
