FRANTIC efforts failed to save a man crushed under a car he was repairing.

Michael Scott was working on a pal's car at Blaydon Trade Park, in Gateshead, yesterday afternoon when the tragedy happened.

Passers-by who saw Mr Scott trapped under the Ford Fiesta, lifted the vehicle and released him.

They then called emergency services and the 46-year-old was taken to Newcastle General Hospital.

But sadly nothing could be done for him and he died shortly after despite efforts of medical staff to revive him.

Police have launched an investigation and have examined the scene of the accident.

Det Insp Derek Barrett said it happened on a minor side road surrounded by trees.

"Detectives have examined the scene and as far as we are concerned it would appear to be a tragic accident," he said.

"We do not believe that there has been any third party involvement.

"This man has been working under a car when it is believed the jack has given way and the vehicle has fallen on him. …
