A Challenge to Walk the Streets; Casino Residents Say Unsafe Crossings and Speeding Drivers Offer Pedestrians . .

THE streets of Casino are not safe, according to the latest ratepayers' survey of Richmond Valley residents.

Pedestrian safety was identified as one of the big issues by those people who responded to the survey.

Carolyn Ross, of Fairy Hill, said crossing the road in Casino's CBD presented a challenge for pedestrians.

"I just swerve around the traffic," Mrs Ross said.

Mrs Ross said poorly located pedestrian crossings were part of the problem.

She identified two troublesome pedestrian crossings, both located close to the Barker and Centre streets roundabout.

"They are just metres from the roundabout," she said.

Mrs Ross said it was difficult for traffic coming off the roundabout to stop in time for people using the crossing.

"They need to be moved away from the roundabout," she said.

Other pedestrians The Northern Star spoke with said drivers speeding through the CBD was another big problem. …
