CARLOS EDWARDS believes Sunderland's world-class Stadium of Light deserves to host World Cup football in 2018.

Edwards was a member of the welcome committee on Wearside when an FA delegation arrived in Sunderland to run the rule over the city and the stadium with a view to including it as part of England's bid to host the World Cup in nine years' time.

Sunderland winger Edwards, who played in the 2006 World Cup finals for Trinidad & Tobago, says the ground would be a perfect venue for World Cup football.

He said: "The Stadium of Light is a world-class stadium. It would be perfect for World Cup games and I'm very excited about the idea that it might happen.

"I'm 30 now, so if it did come off it would obviously be too late for me to be involved, but I would still like to think that Sunderland would get the chance to stage games.

"If it were to happen, it would only increase my pride in years to come to be able to tell people that I played for Sunderland and that was my home ground. …
