JAMES Hudson is confident he has signed up for an exciting new project at the Newcastle Falcons following his shock move from Premiership finalists London Irish.

Hudson's decision to move to Tyneside shocked English rugby, as the 27-year-old had been an important component of the Exiles outfit which came so close to winning the title last season before a narrow defeat to Leicester Tigers in the final.

However, the lock, a major threat at the lineout and a rampaging presence in the loose, decided to move on after three years in London to take on the challenge of re-establishing the Falcons as a major Premiership force.

Hudson is one of 17 new signings this summer as director of rugby Steve Bates oversees a radical overhaul of the firstteam squad, and the former England Saxon is thrilled to be at a club where he hopes to push for international recognition.

Hudson, who began his career with Bath, admitted: "People might think it was a strange move to make, moving from a team like London Irish which reached the Premiership final last season.

"I just thought it was a really good opportunity. I had a great three years with London Irish and there was a definite progression.

"Last season was probably my best year as well. I played a lot more rugby in the Premiership and I really benefited from that in terms of my development as a player.

"It just hit home a little bit that when it came to the big games, I was not starting. I was filling the role coming off the bench a lot.

"It was a fight the whole time to start, and this is an opportunity to come to a club which can offer me a key role in the side. I want to be playing a big part in the team.

"This is an exciting time at Newcastle and I have been given the opportunity to have a big role in moving the club forward. …
