A HARDWOOD bench has been unveiled as a memorial to a renowned Northumberland councillor who died last year.

The bench is situated in an attractive open space at Wentworth Leisure Centre in Hexham and commemorates the contribution made to the centre's development by former Tynedale Council leader John Herron.

Coun Herron's wife Rosalinde and other members of his family cut a ribbon on the seat before it was positioned ina tranquil area between the new pool development and the leisure centre, overlooking the athletics track.

A plaque on the seat acknowledges the great contribution that John made to the swimming pool development at Wentworth, as well as to other leisure initiatives in the former district, during his time as a Tynedale councillor. Mrs Herron said: "We feel very honoured that John's contribution has been marked in this way and were touched by the thought that went into what wasa very special occasion for us.

"John watched the progress of the pool development with great interest, and would have been pleased and proud to see so many people, young and old, taking advantage of the wonderful facility. …
