A BLIND great-grandmother has donned her apron to help others.

Nell Moore lost her sight in both eyes recently, but instead of feeling sorry for herself, the 76-year-old is trying to help others by selling homemade cakes and her personal possessions. She hopes to raise enough money for a guide dog, not for herself but for someone else.

Mrs Moore, of Falmouth Road, Heaton, Newcastle, said: "I would love to get a dog for the blind because I know how difficult it becomes to get around once you lose your sight.

"Everyone keeps asking me why I don't get one, but I have my beloved cat Cookie and she wouldn't like another animal in the house. She might not be able to take me to the shops but I can't walk very far anyway."

The great-grandmother of 10 is hoping to also donate some of the funds towards the People's Kitchen, in Bath Lane, Newcastle, which provides support to homeless people. …
