I''m based at Cherry Knowle Hospital in Sunderland, but travel trust-wide - across Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust, the North East''s mental health, disability and neuro-rehabilitation trust.

WHAT DOES YOUR JOB INVOLVE?

The role of practice placement facilitator is a complex one and can vary slightly from each organisation, however the role mainly covers such things as; Working in collaboration with university and NTW Trust colleagues to enhance communication pathways by sharing, exchanging and disseminating information in relation to pre and post-registration nursing issues.

Acting as a vital point of contact for students, mentors/educators and university academic staff.

Being instrumental in identifying Trust clinical placement capacity to ensure that it can maintain its obligation to the commissioned student nurse numbers agreed with the North East Strategic Health Authority.

Facilitating mentorship update workshops to ensure practice mentors/educators are adequately prepared for their role.

Working in collaboration with the placement managers to carry out an educational audit of practice to verify that the learning environment offered to students meets current quality standards. Ascertaining that students can maximise learning opportunities and are exposed to a supportive learning environment that creates a sense of belonging.

Creating a Trust-wide culture that welcomes and values the positive impact of students in practice

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT QUALITIES YOU NEED FOR THIS TYPE OF WORK?

Need to be able to communicate to a varying level of audience Be flexible and professional in your work ethic A sound understanding of the academic curriculum, and requirements of an academic programme of study An awareness of the pressures and issues that prevail which can impact on the student experience, and the support network requirements of mentors/educators in the practice context A sense of humour also helps HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS PROFESSION?
