Harness Racing Shows Signs of Possible Return

EFFORTS to reintroduce harness racing to the Darling Downs received another boost on Monday night when lighting for the newly constructed Toowoomba Showgrounds track was tested successfully.

The RASQ Harness Racing Club in March this year successfully resurrected harness racing at the Toowoomba Royal Show and the switching on this week of track lighting is another possible step towards conducting racing more regularly at the venue.

The newly formed club is looking to partially fill the breach of the former Darling Downs Harness Racing Club which successfully staged TAB racing at Clifford Park Paceway before Queensland harness racing officials withdrew their support for the meetings.

Monday's trialling session under lights gives the club another racing option if it is successful in lobbying for additional meetings to its annual show program.

"Unfortunately our horse numbers were down a little at the jump outs due to a couple of stables being unavailable," RASQ club spokesman Anthony Collins said. …
