A TEAM of 120 Tees Valley athletes with learning disabilities have their sights set on glory.

Along with their coaches, they will be coming together with other competitors from across the North-east to form a 270-strong Northern Region team heading to Leicester to compete in the Special Olympics National Summer Games.

The event starts on Saturday and ends on July 31.

The Skelton/Cleveland group will leave, in coach convoy, from Upsall Hall Rural Centre, in Nunthorpe.

Final preparations are well under way and excitement is building as athletes receive their new uniform and equipment.

Team manager Keith Wilcox said: "The team very much appreciates the support of local individuals and organisations who have helped to make the dream come true."

Cleveland athletes will be competing in 15 different sports disciplines with squads ranging from athletics, football and swimming to badminton, golf and equestrian.

The National Games are held every four years as part of the Special Olympic Calendar of events but this will be the first time a host area has had the games return. …
