IT'S commendable that the local and national press are covering the spread of swine flu, but why has flu never been covered like this during the last few decades? It has the same symptoms after all, aching bones, runny noses etc. Let's face it, we all know the facts on flu, don't we? A variant develops approximately every seven years, normally in the Far East then it spreads worldwide (a pandemic). In this country every year between three or four percent of people who catch flu will die. That's 30,000 for every million people. Why panic now? PM, Wallsend.

TRAINING and experience is never a waste of money. Princes William and Harry passing their basic training and Prince Harry serving in Afghanistan shows they at least have something in common with the forces.

This is unlike the Government that, certainly in the present cabinet, includes no-one who has served in the forces.

Yet they make decisions that cost servicemen and women their lives.

REGARDING recent figures on knife crime. Until we have judicial prison system that actually penalises law breakers, nothing will change. It appears those who live outside the law benefit much more than the 'law abiding'.

Prisons appear to be holiday camps. Criminals are given every benefit available - whereas the decent citizen can not afford them. The 'do gooders' are hell bent on justifying their jobs by insisting criminals can be 'saved'.

Hard labour never hurt anyone. Sentences to reflect the crime should be compulsory - no remissions PM, Wallsend.

I MIGHT be a bit of a fatalist, but I am not in the least bit worried about swine flu. I reckon we will all probably get it eventually and there isn't much we can do about it.

I am not young but I am in generally good health. I think the NHS is doing a great job and should I need medicine, I think the NHS will provide it. …
