FORMER Durham batsman Gary Scott was the batting hero for Northumberland on the opening day of their Minor Counties Championship clash with Cumberland at Jesmond.

Scott was the only one of the makeshift North side to make a major impression with the bat on a pitch which was especially lively early on.

After being asked to bat first, North had reached 239-8 off 58 overs by the close of a rain-curtailed day with the impressive Scott still unbeaten on 115. "His was a massive contribution to our innings and he hit the ball cleanly to all parts of the ground," said Northumberland team manager Bill Graham.

"Gary batted exceptionally well and his partnership with Rich Wilkinson put us back into contention after we had struggled a bit in midinnings."

Bottom-of-the table Cumberland made an impressive start to the three-day contest with both Ramonpreet Singh and Michael Turns sent back to the pavilion with only 32 runs on the board.

Alex Stead accounted for South Shields batsman Paul Muchall, who made 26 as Northumberland reached 94-3 off 30 overs at tea. …
