HELPING repair the properties and minds of Victorian bushfire victims was a cool change for ex-Chatsworth fire fighter and landscaper, David Flower.

"It's seven degrees now," he said at 3.30pm Tuesday. "And it started out about three. It was minus five on Saturday.

"It's a dark, cold time of year and that makes what we are doing even more important."

David is a full-time volunteer with Blaze Aid, this year's Rural Aid beneficiary of Gympie's National Music Muster.

"It's dark and it's freezing and you have people trying to live in temporary homes - a tent, caravan or a shed," he said.

"Even people whose houses are intact lost sheds and equipment. Sometimes people find they don't even have a hammer. It breaks people's hearts."

Well known in Gympie for his horticultural skills and involvement with the Chatsworth Rural Fire Brigade, David is helping restore gardens and landscaping, as well as helping out with Blaze Aid's core work, rebuilding fences. …
