A BOUTIQUE owner has told how the difficulty in buying good quality drugs led him to bulk-purchase thousands of pounds of cocaine for his own use.

Tahir Majid, the owner of Yakuza clothing store on Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough, is accused of possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply.

The 42-year-old businessman accepts possession of the 4.67oz of cocaine but maintains it was bought for personal use, not to sell on. Yesterday Majid, who is on trial at Teesside Crown Court, entered the witness box to tell the jury how he had purchased pounds 4,700 of cocaine.

He told the court he had built up a serious habit over the last five or six years and that at the time of his arrest was finding the drug difficult to come across.

Majid said his regular supplier arrived at his store two days before the police raided and offered him the large amount - more than four times what he might usually purchase.

"I couldn't buy any at the time," he told the jury. …
