A HEALTH scheme piloted in the North East has seen fruit and veg sales in some corner shops soar more than double.

The Change4Life programme, which encourages Tyneside convenience stores to promote healthy eating in a bid to tackle obesity, has been such a success since it started in November that it will now be rolled out throughout the rest of the country.

And yesterday, Health Secretary Andy Burnham dropped into the Spar Shop, in Blakelaw, to commend staff and customers for their efforts before officially announcing the scheme's expansion.

Twelve shops were initially involved in the scheme and were given a "fruit and veg makeover", stocking a wide range of fresh produce, displaying Change4Life posters and signs and appointing a member of staff to champion fruit and veg in store.

The Department of Health ploughed pounds 200,000 into the trial programme and funded those stores from more deprived areas. Since it began, a further 87 North East shops jumped onboard. …
