Valley's Volunteer Firemen Can Meet Summer Demand

RURAL Fire Service brigades throughout the Clarence Valley are busy preparing for the next fire season.

Clarence Valley brigades' district manager Brett Condie said the local area was 'pretty moist' following a wet start to 2009 but he had no doubt surface fuels would dry out as the weather warmed up.

And, he had a warning: "Given we've had fairly benign fire seasons over the past three years, we're anticipating this season could be busier," Mr Condie said.

"Our training schedule has been fairly hectic and in the past week our hazard reduction program has begun and will continue over the next couple of months.

"That will involve a lot of our local brigades who will be working with local landowners."

The issue of Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteer numbers made news this week when the NSW Opposition claimed official figures of 70,000 members were exaggerated.

Emergency Services spokeswoman Melinda Pavey said there was a 70 per cent shortfall in the number of RFS volunteers in some regions and the actual figure was closer to 45,000 volunteers. …
