On Look out for Firebugs; Police Launch New Operation

BUNDABERG Police are on the hunt for a firebug who has put lives and businesses at risk, with a recent string of arson attacks on rubbish bins.

The latest blaze was at the South Bundaberg Caltex on Walker Street about 10pm on Wednesday night, sparked in a pile of cardboard to the side of the store.

"It could have been disastrous considering it's a fuel station," Caltex finance manager for the Bundaberg region Simon Dalrymple said.

"When stations are open there is the issue of fumes which could cause an explosion or fire."

The attack damaged an ice freezer at the side of the shop, but it is believed the flames went out before they could spread.

Security camera footage has been provided to police, in the hope of identifying the person responsible.

The nearby Southside Central shopping centre has fallen victim to arsonists three times in the past two weeks, with several other fires reported around Bundaberg's city centre and inner suburbs. …
