THE forecast for our holiday in Cornwall was dreadful. Rain, rain and more rain.

Determined that we'd still enjoy ourselves, we set off with waterproofs and wellies for keeping dry plus books and our faithful old Travel Scrabble to entertain. Oh, and a few bottles of something strong to keep out the chill.

The latter was consumed - seemed silly to bring it all the way back. However, the Scrabble was never opened, the books rarely touched, the wellies remained in the car boot and the waterproofs were worn just once.

Yes, the threatened floodwaters failed to fall and we returned refreshed and a little brown - although that could have been as much from the wind as the sun!

The forecasters admitted this week that their promised "barbecue summer" isn't happening. But we should remember that the sun has shone - in fact, it's shining here in Newcastle as I write this. Yet, as always, we'll remember the bad this summer and forget the days we had picnics or walks or sat on the patio or in pub gardens. …
