History Gets Artistic Look from Young; CHILDREN MAKE BROOCHES LIKE THE ANGLO-SAXONS

CHILDREN showed their creativity by mixing art with history at events across Tyneside. From Anglo Saxon brooches to paintings, families joined in activities at galleries and museums.

Young artists went to the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, to take advantage of drop-in art ventures.

Print Studio & Create! are two sessions being held through the school holidays, offering youngsters the chance to try printing techniques in the Print Studio.

The Create! lessons, led by artists Katie Howkins and Deirdre McCrinnon, encourage children to take inspiration from the gallery's collection and design their own masterpieces.

A spokesperson from the Laing Art Gallery said: "The children's Print Studio is inspired by the Northern Print Biennale Print Awards exhibition which is on show at the Laing, the Hatton and Northern Print.

"Some impressive work has been created in the drop-in sessions which are proving hugely popular." Elsewhere children were making their own historical jewellery.

Bede's World, Jarrow, invited children to discover more about items you would find in an AngloSaxon grave, as well as create their own brooch from the time. …
