Jeff's Smoking Mad over Winter Burn-Offs

IF you have seen and smelt smoke around Noosa these past few days, it could be coming out of Jeff Nuske's ears.

The Noosa resident of 20 years is fed up with the annual burn-offs that cause distressing breathing difficulties and allergic reactions for many residents.

Mr Nuske said that every winter the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service conducted burn-offs in the national parks surrounding Noosa.

"They do try to light the fires when the prevailing winds blow away from the town but at night when the prevailing winds drop, the smoke blankets the whole township," he said.

"It's a fairly primitive way to go about what they're trying to achieve.

"Every winter we see great plumes of smoke with smoke ash and pollution going up into the atmosphere."

Mr Nuske said it made a mockery of the federal and state governments' and the community's concern for global warming and environmental pollution.

"There must be other ways to achieve what they want instead of running around lighting fires," he said. …
