BLYTH Spartans will play a Newcastle United X1 tonight in a re-run of a game which took place almost exactly 100 years ago to commemorate the centenary of their Croft Park stadium.

Newcastle beat the Spartans 4-2 in the 1909 match which was the very first game to be played at Croft Park, which has been Blyth's home ever since.

The gate receipts from tonight's rematch will go to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and The Children's Foundation, and the occasion will be marked by the unveiling of a new covered enclosure at the Kingsway End.

For the first time in Blyth Spartan's history there will be cover on all four sides of Croft Park which manager Mick Tait believes will only add to the atmosphere.

He said: "Croft Park is now a tidy little stadium and with every section covered it will be noisier than ever.

"We now have to match the progress made off the pitch with results and performances on it.

"It may take a little while for what is effectively a new side to find its feet, but I'm confident we can play good football and get results this season. …
