INSPIRED by her own personal battle, she started snapping away.

After beating lung cancer, Meg Colpitts used the money she saved on cigarettes to buy her first camera.

And seven years on the 67year-old grandmother-of-eight has her own exhibition at Newcastle's new City Library.

Over the years, Meg, who grew up on Elswick Road in the city's West End, has taken tens of thousands of images of Tyneside life.

She has captured buildings earmarked for demolition, celebrities and Royals visiting the region and members of the Toon Army as they cheer on New-castlUnited. Now Meg's photos of teenagers socialising in Newcastle have gone on show at the new exhibition, called City Kids.

They include people meeting at Old Eldon Square - known as the Green - and a teenage girl standing by a phone box.

The pictures are some of those captured by Meg since her hobby began in 2002.

She said: "I had a major operation, which didn't work, so I had to have chemotherapy and radiotherapy. …
