GARETH Southgate admitted today that he had not been able to assemble the side he had anticipated ahead of the Championship pipe-opener. But the Boro boss today assured fans that the 11 players running out against Sheffield United at the Riverside tomorrow (8pm) would lack nothing in attitude. Southgate, pictured, told the Evening Gazette today: "I have to be honest and say that I am not where I would have liked to have been in terms of the squad. "But that is more than made up for by the attitude of the players and the performances they have given me in the last few weeks. "That's why I am looking forward to the game. I believe that everybody will give their best. "This is a terrific time of the season. The players are buzzing and we will go into the first game with a lot of optimism." Southgate added: "There is no hiding from the fact that there are some players here who probably wouldn't want to be here.

"Either we have to find buyers for them during August or we have to win them round and convince them this is the place to be." The Boro boss still expects there to be further changes over the next three and a half weeks before the transfer window closes. But he also realises that one or two players who had expected to be going, could well be staying. Southgate has never named the players who indicated to him last May that they would prefer to leave the club, though he has since stressed on several occasions that he would have wanted to move on some of the bigger wage earners. Those players who indicated they were not happy to stay are still be contracted to the club, and could well be here for another ten months at least. So Southgate and his coaches will work hard over the next few weeks to make sure everybody is bound together in a tight ship come September 1.
