Slimline Tonic to Reid's Chances

ANDY Reid curtailed his postseason summer break to just two weeks in a bid to reinvigorate his Sunderland career. By his own admission Reid endured a frustrating campaign as the Black Cats struggled desperately to extricate themselves from relegation trouble - spending as much time stewing on the substitutes' bench as he did prompting play from the heart of midfield.

Reid is determined to make more of an impact this season and has shed almost a stone in weight thanks to an intensive personal fitness programme that he has been following over the season.

It is a transformation that has not gone unnoticed by boss Steve Bruce, who singled Reid out for praise following his encouraging performance on the left of midfield at Celtic last weekend.

With Lorik Cana and pre-season rev-elatioJordan Henderson added to the midfield mix for the forthcoming campaign, competition promises to be intense, and Reid feels that the complacency that seeped into Sunderland's play last term will not return.

"I had a couple of weeks off after the end of the season. I needed to recharge mentally and physically, but after that fortnight I got straight back into work a little bit ahead of everyone else," he said.

"I worked every day apart from that two weeks, and I worked really, really hard to get myself into the best possible shape for the season. I had certain targets and I think I've managed to hit them.

"I'm delighted with how I feel. I feel great in training, great in games - I'm really, really happy with the work that I've done and the results that I've got so far.

"I want to play every week this season.

I was sort of in and out last season and I don't want that to be the case this season. I think every one wants to play every game but you look at the squad and the competition will be intense so you have to get yourself in decent shape and you have to apply yourself in the right way. …
