THE Sunshine Coast council had to take control of key roads at Alexandra Headland and Coolum from the state government, the council was told yesterday.

Sunshine Coast transport portfolio head Vivien Griffin said that was the only way to make both areas people-friendly places.

Ms Griffin said that could only be delivered if control of main through-roads reverted to council.

She and Alexandra Headland divisional councillor Chris Thompson have already met with staff to consider the issue.

A report will go to council to weigh up the costs and benefits involved. The state government historically compensates councils that accept responsibility for its roads.

Ms Griffin said the knee-jerk position, "why take on an asset that's a liability" simply let the community down.

Mr Thompson has been arguing the case for some time for the take over of Alexandra Parade, with Queensland Transport's CoastConnect plans to add another lane to the route bringing the matter to a head. …
