AN Australian GT title winner will race at the Leyburn Sprints this weekend.

Bevan Batham's number one vehicle, the Centaur Waggott, was built for John French, who won the Australian title in 1962.

Batham, a strong supporter of the Leyburn Sprints since it began in 1995, and his race partner John Devitt have entered three of their vehicles - the 1962 Waggott, the 1965 Centaur Clubman and the 1962 Elfin Mallala.

Mr Batham said his Centaur Waggott was the only one of its kind built and he has raced the car since he bought it in 1964.

"I still have the receipt. We bought it on the 16th of May, 1964," Mr Batham said.

That is when it all started for Mr Batham, a motor mechanic who has been involved in Queensland racing ever since. In the 1960s he never missed a meeting.

"It's like truck driving; it is in your blood. Once you have been involved you want to compete. You don't have to be in the top levels to enjoy it," Mr Batham said. …
