IN reply to Mr D Godfrey of Stockton (Soaking Up The Profits, 06.08.09), I am a club steward and my family have been involved in the club trade for 50 years. I take offence at his remark "I have yet to see a poor landlord or club steward", implying the cost of a pint is our fault.

Most pubs landlords are struggling and many are tied to the brewery. Then there's wages for staff, and the upkeep and running costs of the pub.

Has Mr Godfrey worked for no pay like landlords and club stewards who take on more and more hours to counter a big wage bill? People who go into pubs and clubs see a landlord or club steward walking around pulling pints and talking to members, then tell them they don't have a real job.

In social clubs, a steward doesn't put prices up, that decision is in the hands of a committee. In the clubs I know, the steward works for a wage. …
