On the Horns of a Dilemma? Dairy Industry Running a Program in Seven Local Schools to Plug Shortage of Workers

HAVE you ever thought about working with cows?

That is the question the Australian dairy industry is asking school students to consider as they roll out a new educational program to seven local schools.

The program, called Cows Create Careers, is designed to give students a look at job opportunities in the dairy industry and to get some hands-on experience.

Program co-ordinator and Tuncester dairy farmer Paul Weir said most kids did not know much about cows, other than the basic fact that milk comes from them.

"The program is designed to create awareness about all the different careers associated with the dairy industry and not just on-farm," Mr Weir said.

The program is taught as part of the students' science or agriculture lessons and has been developed by education specialists.

As part of the course students work in teams of four to five to care for three-week-old calves kept on the school grounds. …
