CRACKING THE HABIT; Prisons Get Drugs Boost

simon.walton@eveninggazette.co.uk PRISONERS on Teesside are to receive improved drug treatment while behind bars in a bid to steer them from future crime.

Holme House Prison, in Stockton, has received a share of a pounds 2.9m grant from the Home Office to bring in an Integrated Drug Treatment System (IDTS).

The jail will start the treatment system soon, while Kirklevington Grange, near Yarm, will launch it next year.

The funding will be used to upgrade treatment facilities and to ensure drug users in prison have better access to recovery and reintegration services, including education, training and carer and family support.

The system aims to break the link between drug addiction and offending.

Holme House governor Matt Spencer said: "Drug addiction and dealing in the Tees Valley is a big issue and lies behind a lot of offending and re-offending in our area. All criminal justice agencies work hard to reduce this link. …
