Councillors Clash over Dump Days

MACKAY Regional Councillor George Christensen was filthy about council's plan to drop a free waste weekend a year.

But he is now taking the gloves off after waste services councillor Greg Thomsen said he would keep pushing for the cuts, even after council knocked the plan on the head.

In Monday's Daily Mercury, Cr Thomsen said he expected the changes would be introduced eventually, though conceded it would not happen this financial year.

Cr Christensen, however, said Cr Thomsen was pushing an agenda and the free waste weekend changes were currently out for public consultation, not for councillors to campaign for to the media

"Council has rejected, for the time being, the proposal put forward to reduce the free dump weekends from three to two," Cr Christensen said. "It's not a council view at all.

"The council view is that the community will have its say."

Cr Christensen is pushing for a voucher system to be put in place so all residents can dump their rubbish whenever it is convenient for them, a plan long opposed by Cr Thomsen. …
