MARTIN CULL admits that Billingham Synthonia are in 'must win' territory if they are to have any chance of avoiding relegation .

It may look a forlorn hope given that they are 46 points behind Thornaby and Blackhall, the two teams immediately above them.

But Martin, who snapped up five wickets against Richmondshire last Saturday, wants to see the team live up to its potential in the remaining six games of the season, irrespective of whether that is enough to save them.

"We are better than our results suggest," he said. "But we haven't played anything like as well as we can. One of the two teams we have beaten this season is Middlesbrough, which shows what we are capable of.

"But showing we have ability in one game, then not doing it often enough is what makes it so annoying.

"The main problem has been the batting. We haven't given ourselves anything like enough runs to play with."

As a bowler he finds that frustrating. His five wickets helped restrict Richmond last week, but Synthonia were then skittled out.

He said: "It's about winning games, and if you lose then individual performances don't make you feel any better.

"Besides I have got five wickets only twice this season. We play cricket to enjoy it, but it's impossible to feel good when you are losing."

Apart from not scoring enough runs, Synthonia have had a habit of dropping catches, especially the opposition professional.

"You cannot give good batsmen a second chance, and we have done," he said.

"As a neutral it's entertaining to watch these guys bat, but it's not much fun bowling to them, especially when chances have gone down.

"We have to try putting things right in the remaining games.

"It's Hartlepool this weekend, yet another side whose pro we dropped in the earlier game with them. …
