A HOMELESS man was robbed of everything his owned by a violent thug.

Matthew Townend, 18, had just been to a soup kitchen in Newcastle when he was set upon by Thomas Calder. Calder kicked Mr Townend in the head before raining punches on him in the foyer of a city centre hostel.

He then robbed him of all his belongings - just a watch and some toiletries.

Calder, 20, of no fixed abode, was captured on CCTV brutally attacking Mr Townend, helped by a 13-year-old accomplice.

Jailing him, Judge David Wood said: "You picked on a young man who was homeless and the CCTV makes it fairly plain what happened.

"You kicked him in the face and punched him repeatedly then took his watch and practically everything he had. The items taken were not of great value to you, but were probably of great value to him.

"This was a mean and unpleasant offence."

Mr Townend had just returned to the hostel at Vallum Court, Bath Lane, Newcastle, on May 1. …
