BUBBLING new boy Mark Yeates has got nothing but positive vibes about Boro's season.

The flying flanker, a pounds 500,000 summer arrival from Colchester, insists the squad is upbeat about their prospects for promotion in the coming Championship campaign.

Despite last season's painful relegation the former Irish Under-21 international says the squad is focussed and spirits are high.

"There was no sense of doom and gloom in training when I arrived here," he said. "To be honest, right from day one everyone has been very positive about things.

"What can you do? You can't sit and mope around. There is a big season ahead and everyone knows what the goal is and that's to get straight back up.

"Everyone at the club is very positive about that. We all believe we can do it.

"With the talented young squad we have here and with one or two additions here and there then we're definitely going to be right up there."

Yeates was one of Boro's brightest sparks in the 0-0 curtain-raising stalemate against an imposing Sheffield United at the Riverside, a game he believes shows Boro have what it takes in a competitive division.

"We played football and that's our way but we also really battled a lot as well," he said. "This is tough league and there are a lot of teams that are big and strong and physical that will test us like Sheffield United did.

"We showed we can do what is needed in those games. We can battle and hold our own.

"They got the ball forward quickly to the big lad up front but David Wheater and Robert Huth were superb in handling that pressure.

"Rhys won a lot of tackles and the midfield worked hard, me and Adam (Johnson) got up and down the flanks and the lads up front worked their socks off. That's what you need in those kind of games "We were disappointed we didn't create enough chances and get the goals - but it will come, I'm sure about that."
