Councillors Fight Changes to Developer Contributions

LIMITING developer contributions would not make cheaper building blocks, Cr Bill Palmer told fellow councillors last week.

Coffs Harbour's deputy mayor was commenting at Thursday's council meeting on Coffs Harbour City Council's fight to maintain its level of developer contributions above $20,000 for four out of six new land release areas.

The Minister for Planning moved this year to force councils to seek Ministerial approval for any contributions above this level.

"To think it will make cheaper blocks is a fallacy," Cr Palmer said.

"Some developers will be rubbing their hands about a bit of extra 'cream'.

"It may in fact devalue blocks because of reduced amenities. One thing that misses out is libraries."

The mayor Cr Keith Rhoades said he and the general manager Stephen Sawtell had met the Minister for Planning the previous Friday to talk about the effect of the reductions of Section 94 contributions. …
