St Luke's to Host Funeral for Airman; Military Honours for Recovered Pilot

SUSANNA Carver may not have known her brother-in-law, but his presence has always been felt in her family.

Pilot Officer Robert Carver, of Toowoomba, went missing in Vietnam in 1970, three years before Susanna married his brother Bill.

Pilot Officer Carver's remains, along with his companion Flying Officer Michael Herbert, of Adelaide, were finally found on July 30 this year near the crash site of a Canberra bomber.

"He was apparently a very likeable sort of person," Mrs Carver said of her brother-in-law.

"Bill always said he was a bit of a rough-head whereas Bobby was the lady's man.

"My Bill loved gambling, the pub and horses, but Bobby drank wine and was an upstanding sort of bloke."

Pilot Officer Carver's remains will return to Toowoomba on August 31, nearly 40 years after he went missing.

A military funeral will be held at St Luke's Anglican Church, Toowoomba, on September 3, followed by a private cremation service. …
