Mackay Cane Crush Reaches Halfway Mark

ALMOST three million tonnes out of a revised estimate of 5.45 million tonnes has been crushed by Mackay Sugar's three mills, Racecourse, Marian and Farleigh, during this year's crush.

Canegrowers Mackay chairman Paul Schembri said the harvest had so far been characterised by fine weather, which had made for ideal harvesting conditions.

"While the dry conditions have caused the initial estimate of 5.85 million tonnes to fall by some 400,000 tonnes, the run of fine weather has given growers greater confidence that the total crop will be removed," Mr Schembri said.

The crush is expected to finish in mid to late October.

The real surprise this year has been the sugar content.

Sugar content last week reached 15.51 PRS and the season average stands at 13.92 PRS.

"This higher-than-expected sugar content is the best result recorded in the last five years," Mr Schembri said.

"While sugar prices have hit 25-year highs, most market commentators have assessed the market as being very volatile. …
