Beware Ticks on the Prowl

AS the weather has started to get warmer and the bugs have begun to reappear, it is once again time to be on the lookout for ticks, particularly if you are at the beach or in the bush.

It is estimated that more than 75,000 dogs and cats are paralysed in Australia each year due to paralysis ticks. Unfortunately, many die.

Deaths can be prevented, according to vet Doctor Vicki Child, of the Grafton Veterinary Clinic, in Bacon Street.

"We have had a couple of cases come in already this year which is quiet unusual," she said.

"It is well worth it to check your dog every day and get some kind of preventative spray, rinse and collar or tablet going regularly. We find that prevention is the best measure and that a Pro Ban tablet given every two days is the most effective method."

It is well worth checking your dog every day by simply giving them a rub down or looking at the skin through the hair. …
