Car-Free Strip for Reveller's Safety

MACKAY'S nightclubbers may never have to dodge the headlights again, with council tipped to consider a plan to block off our City Heart strip from cars.

On Friday and Saturday nights, along with Sunday mornings for the markets, traffic would be detoured around the area, turning the area around parts of Wood and Victoria streets into a nightclubber-friendly area.

The plan will be considered by Mackay Regional Council in coming weeks, assuming councillor David Perkins can convince city traders that it's a good idea.

At the moment, Cr Perkins said, there was some concern over just how much of a mess city revellers would make if the odd car and truck were taken out of the equation.

"The report will be brought back to council," Cr Perkins said.

"The City Safe committee is in favour of it because it's a lot safer when you don't have cars going through the city.

"The CBD Economic Advisory Committee is suggesting that if you open it as a mall, (revellers) can spread the rubbish elsewhere. …
