THERE is a chink of light at the end of the tunnel for troubled Durham City ahead of tonight's UniBond Premier Division game at home to Retford United.

Hit by the walk-out of virtually the entire squad following the withdrawal of their main sponsor, City fielded a team comprising almost entirely of teenagers in the 7-2 defeat at Marine on Saturday.

Two of the senior players remaining, striker Paul Brayson and midfield man Calvin Smith, should again be in the line-up tonight.

Brayson, and fellow contracted player Tommy English, however have both been linked to a move to Blyth Spartans, and are not expected to be at the Esh Stadium much longer.

Shell-shocked manager Lee Collings believes he may be able to field a slightly more experienced side against lowly Retford, who have drawn their opening two games.

Collings said: "The current situation is very disheartening. It is going to be extremely difficult to finish out of the bottom three and it looks like the club is on its way back to the Northern League. …
