Widgee Church Saved from Flames

Article excerpt

LOCALS are again reminded of the heavy fuel load around the area and the close call experienced by the Widgee Catholic Church last weekend.

With little or no rain on the horizon, chief fire warden George Cotter is very concerned about the present fire danger.

As a full fire ban is now in place it is vital that people take care when dealing with flammables.

The region had a very close call last weekend with grasses around the Widgee Catholic Church catching fire and nearly causing the loss of the church.

Quick work by the Widgee Rural Fire Brigade volunteers had the fire under control in a very short time and they were able to save the building.

With a very dry season ahead and the fire danger increasing, the Widgee rural fire brigade is seeking more volunteers. Interested persons can contact president Rob Lonergan on 5484 0201 or first officer Bill Janke on 5484 0130, or drop into the fire station next Thursday evening at the monthly meeting from 7:30pm.

This week the students paid tribute to local seniors, trooping over to the Widgee Community Complex on Thursday to entertain local residents with the songs that won them first place in the sacred singing at the recent Gympie Eisteddfod.

ANZAC committee

WITH preparations for Anzac Day 2010 well under way, the committee is looking for input from the local community in regard to establishing a permanent Anzac cenotaph outside the Memorial Hall in Gympie Woolooga Road.

Questionnaires will be placed at the local store, Widgee Rural Supplies and the Bushman's Bar for everyone to complete and have their say. …
