IT took one episode of mindless behaviour on a Rockhampton street to cause immense damage and heartache.

The aftershocks of Kakahua Tongahia Stainton Ferguson's brief but brutal attack on two men almost three years ago were still being felt in the Rockhampton District Court yesterday.

Long after the headlines from that vicious 2006 assault had faded from most memories, the ordeal of that night goes on for the victims, the offender, their families and friends.

Many of them would be still deeply affected by the impact of the crime and now the sentencing.

For one of the victims the recovery from the serious physical and psychological injuries is ongoing and probably lifelong.

Judge Martin said the assault had effectively ruined the victim's life, as a result of drunken, mindless, violent behaviour.

Ferguson had no criminal history and good character references.

He was sentenced to three years and six months in prison, but will probably only serve 12 months. …
