MORE than 100 Teesside mums-to-be quit smoking last year, according to latest figures.

They were among almost 5,000 people in the arASea to give up cigarettes between April 2008 and March 2009.

And with the Gazette launching its Quit for Baby's Sake campaign in February, it is hoped this year's figures will be even better.

The campaign urged every pregnant woman on Teesside to quit smoking for their baby's sake after it was revealed that one in three Teesside mums are still smoking at birth.

Data released by the NHS Information Centre shows 4,954 people who attended NHS Stop Smoking Services on Teesside successfully stubbed out the habit between April 2008 and March 2009.

In Stockton, 1,461 people managed to stop, in Middlesbrough 1,201, in Redcar and Cleveland 1,152 and in Hartlepool 1,140.

The Teesside data shows 117 pregnant smokers set a quit date and achieved their goal.

This included 37 women in Stockton, 30 in Middlesbrough, 30 in Hartlepool and 20 in Redcar and Cleveland. …
