I had a defence witness in a trial ring me the other day to say that he wished we hadn't used his name because he now felt threatened.

I assured him that this paper was watching his back and should anything happen he should ring me straight away.

Obviously that didn't make him feel any more relaxed but I hope he at least believed we cared about his future welfare.

Putting your hand up to testify on behalf of a victim is not an easy thing to do.

Firstly you have to show the courage to stare down an offender and give evidence that could lead to them going to jail.

Yes, it takes courage to do this, but it's something we all must do.

If someone believes it's their right to harm another person then they deserve to face a judge and jury.

It is essential that we as a community stand by and support victims of crime and, most importantly, work with police to help them successfully prosecute those who offend. …
