Ballina's New Surf Club Closer to Reality; Plans Lodged with Council to Build at Lighthouse Beach

PLANS to move the Ballina surf club 'back home' have reached the next stage, with a development application to build a new clubhouse at Lighthouse Beach now lodged with Ballina Shire Council.

This comes after the announcement that Shelly Beach will not be patrolled during the 2009/10 season because of storm damage.

The Ballina Lighthouse and Lismore Surf Lifesaving Club has operated from the Shelly Beach Club since the original clubhouse at Lighthouse Beach was demolished in 2005.

The proposed project includes an observation tower/patrol room, first aid room and public toilet.

A second building, set back from the beach, includes the club facilities, community meeting rooms and a cafe.

It will also have office space for Surf Lifesaving Far North Coast's branch office and the professional lifeguard service which patrols Ballina's beaches during summer and school holiday periods. …
